Sewing Room and Studio Tour - August 2025

Sew Saturday in August four quilters opened up their homes to show the spaces that they sew in and how they organize all their fabric and notions.  It was so fun to see everyones' space.  In some cases it included a tour of the house and grounds.

Here are a few of the take aways:

Having no carpet makes it easy to clean up threads.

Audrey showed her space for sewing but explained that she doesn't sew as often in that room as she does at retreats, in her camper, and at Sew Saturday.  Consequently she likes having things organized for shopping so she can grab and go.

A Tension rod is great for ribbons. This is under Audrey's cutting Table.

Audrey likes having a catch-all basket for supplies in waiting.   Audrey showed a basket of stuff where she cleaned off her space.  All the stuff then will be later distributed to its proper place.

Her fabric is stored on its side lined up rather than stacked for easy removal. No need for cardboard according to her.

Audrey stores by size and color: <1/3 yard prices

1/2-2 yards

2+ yards or garment, upholstery, knit, or canvas/denim

Most of us stored our fabric in cupboards organized by color.  Audrey suggested taking a picture of your stash, so you know what color you might be needing and which ones you have plenty of.

Above, some of Shauna's Stash... Below... Peggy's stash and jars of buttons.

And below here are Deb's totes organizing her stash.

Having everything, iron, machine, and light, plugged into a power strip is very handy!

Peggy loves her built-in ironing station.  She has one in each studio.  They have timers and lights.  The timer keeps you from leaving your iron on forever if you happen to have one of the irons that doesn't have an automatic shutoff.  Most of us do not like those irons with the automatic shutoff... we like a hot iron when we are ready to use it!

Speaking of Ironing Deb likes her Panasonic Cordless iron.

We also saw that Deb has different pins for different purposes.  She recommends Iris pins which are very fine.

Fun stuff in Audrey's Room

We couldn't help but see other parts of the home.  Here are some photos of the amazing rock house built behind Audrey's House.

And a peek into Audrey's Retro Turquoise Camper decorated with bug curtains for Tim and Quilts for her.  This is her new studio on wheels.  It even has a turquoise sewing machine in it!

Shauna has a large portion of her living room dedicated to her sewing and art hobby.

As we stood in Shauna's space we found lots of things to admire.

Including her amazing art hanging on the wall.

Inspiration! Supplies for sketching and drawing, A box of squares all cut out, selvages rolled into balls!

Shauna talked about her favorite pool noodle method of sandwiching quilts and she showed her embroidered blocks with sashing all picked out to border them.

Then we went into a back bedroom and saw lots of her quilts, some to keep and some to give away.
On the way to the bedroom she showed us her postcard wall in the kitchen.  Anytime someone travels somewhere she asks for them to send a postcard.  She had them from all over the world!

Quilt as you go Selvage quilt..
And this beautiful scene is right across the street from her house!

We enter Deb Slechta's Studio through her backyard and look who greets us!

Like many of us, her quilts are displayed for all to enjoy as they enter her space.

Deb has a 10' Long Arm... A nice design wall... Area to cut and iron and sew.  A nice roomy space to create in.

For the scrappy challenge, Deb made a scrap journal using 1000 pieces of different fabric.  Below is another scrappy quilt she started but decided it would be better to finish some other UFO's.

It's Sew Moab is now part of her home in a little shop out back.  While she is not officially in business, you only need contact her, and you can go shopping!

Last but not least we visited Peggy's sewing room and her art studio that she uses part time for her sewing projects.

This little room off the living room is her sewing room.  It was difficult to fit everyone in at once.  This is where her domestic sewing machine lives and all of her stash... and books.. and bags... and baskets... and scraps... ribbons etc.

Showing off her stash!

Having the acrylic top on the machine makes for some nice storage underneath.  Note the bobbin storage stashed under it.

Under her desk she has double sided containers with color sorted thread.

Over the door hooks with lots of bags hanging on them!

Yep, she's a bag lady!

Outside the house is Bear Paw Studio
B

Peggy designed this 12x24' she-shed. The Barnyard in Grand Junction built it in 2020.  Peggy and her husband did all the finish work.  Bob calls it Peggy's playhouse.

This is where she does some of her painting and framing of pastels.  But note the tall table is also great for cutting fabric.
It's also got a corner for her sit-down long arm.

There is a design wall with a UFO on it.
Paintings are stored on the wall when they are not in the gallery

Part of the tour was showing her new kitchen.  Her favorite part is having lots of drawers for storage. It is so much better than crawling into a cupboard.

Audrey got to hold Peggy's Madam Alexander Baby doll and wants to spruce up her hair and find a vintage hat for her.

After the tour we were off to lunch!  A fun day with friends sharing our sewing spaces and all our ideas!
