February 2023 Delicate Stitchers Guild Show and Tell

Deb showed  us this pillow case she made for her hubby for Valentine's Day.  It's Dinosaur Batik material, she prefers the Batik fabric for pillowcases as the material is so much softer for the face.

The senior center requested the guild make place mats for the "Meals on Wheels" program.  These are two beautifully done (of course) placemats made by Deb.  She used fabric she pulled from the cabinets in the sewing room of the senior center.

For the Utah Quilt Guild

Deb was challenged to make 12 identical blocks on a certain theme for their Swap Block Challenge.  Deb said, it's not her habit to make more than one block, or quilt, of the same pattern, so this was a real challenge for her, to make 12 of the same block.    This block is so cute, it's worth the effort, Deb!

Since it was Valentine's Day  on Tuesday, our guild members were asked to bring quilts we had made in the  past on the "Red" theme.  Marian brought placemats she made from 2013, which which was a color play theme, monochromatic well used by Marian.

In 2016, the guild again used color play as the theme for our challenge quilt.  This  year we were supposed to use the initials of our name to choose a color - which meant we could almost make up a color name to fit.  Marian used this Columbine flower for her challenge, beautifully stitched and quilted.  The smaller picture is a closeup to show her handiwork more clearly.

These are bags that Audrey made using the selvage edges.  The class for using this technique was given at the MARC last month.  Sewing with the selvages from the piece of fabric is so much fun, to see the design come together.  The "fabric" created can be used in many ways, from hot pot holders, to full sized quilts or as used here, as bags.

At a quilt retreat recently, Audrey made this pot holder demonstrated by Peggy Harty.  It is a special block  pattern, called "twister" that can then be used in many ways that have been demonstrated - from potholders, table runners, to full sized quilts.  It looks like a fun technique, and very versatile.

At the same retreat, Audrey made two placemats using this bird pattern.  Looks like a fun pattern to play with colors to create the bird.  Thanks Audrey.

\Audrey likes to "find" things at shops and estate sales.  She found these two toddler sized dresses, handmade, with all kinds of interesting design elements.  This  yellow one was designed larger in the bottom for room for the child's diaper.

This cute dress had some special designs handmade to look like embroidery pleating.

We have here a group of  quilts made by  Candi.  The first one is  Humming Bird, using a paper piecing technique taught by Mary Wakeley at a retreat at Canyonlands Fabrics.

"My favorite flower - Rose - using a kit Aunt Bonnee gave me a while ago.  I started and stopped when more interesting projects presented themselves.  Finished in 2023.

Hand quilted square.  "I took a class in Estes Park to learn hand quilting.  The instructor provided all the materials."  2010  This looks like fun, beautifully done and handy for a wall hanging.

Hawaiian Quilt.  "My son and  daughter in law were based on Ohau in 2010.  My husband and I went there to visit.  The 4 of  us flew over to Maui, while there we discovered a quilt shop.  The owner taught Hawaiian quilting.  I took her class and finally 13 years later I finished the quilt.

Detail of one of the blocks  on the Hawaiian quilt and the backing squares of the quilt.

T-shirt Quilt - "I made a T shirt quilt of shirts my friend Mary's nephew had collected.  Tyler had passed away so the quilt was for his mom, Chris.  I had lots of squares left and finally made May a quilt with them.  I took the class from Mary Wakely at Canyonlands Quilt retreat and this prompted me to use Mary's process"  UFO 2023

From Crystal, we have this beautiful quilt using wool, embroidery, and needle turn applique.  It is a design using Scandanavian patterns.  The final quilt was  machine quilted by Pat Byrd.  This quilt is so intriguing, so unique.  I took some close up pictures of the squares.  (sorry, a little blurred.)  I can see where it would be so relaxing and peaceful to work a quilt like this, using this kind of material.  Really wonderful.

Petenia showed us this "Mondo Bag", made from fusible interfacing with pattern stamped on it.  The colors are so pretty, mixed together and complimentary.

Another example of the "twister" pattern first shown awhile ago by Peggy.  Diane used such beautiful colors for this placemat sized quilt.

Diane also used the twister pattern to make this wall hanging.  She said, as she experimented with color, adding a splash of yellow, that she had a "value problem".  But, I have no problem with this quilt and could see it hanging on any wall in  my house.

Deb showed us this charming "Red House" wall  hanging, to go along with last night's red theme.  So cute.

Deb showed us her Pizza Stone Carrier, a pattern she put together herself to use for the pizza stone she uses a lot, especially if she is taking a pizza somewhere.

Deb also showed us purse she made years ago, it's filled with useful pockets, inside and out.  She had a pattern once, but doesn't know where it is now. (Someone asked if maybe she could teach us how to make it and she said maybe she could make up a pattern).  Below is a   Cathedral Window pincushion made during a "Sew Saturday" with Jolly teaching.

Claudia dazzled us with this quilt she made as an experiment from a jelly roll.  I took a closeup of some of the fabric.  It is a variation of jelly roll race, Lovely quilt Claudia

From Shauna:  Various examples of  placemats made for the Senior Center, using fabric strips in totally random order, no theme or color matching here.  " I had a huge stack for black and white fabric strips so I put them together with an occasional bright colored strip".

In keeping with the "red" Valentine theme, I brought one of my older quilts, made  years ago, all red embroidered children made from a pattern book I have.  I find it very relaxing to sit for hours to embroider these pictures, no fancy stitches, just a simple outline.
